Frequently Asked Questions

Can physio actually help arthritis or is it just about managing pain?

It does more than manage pain. Strengthening the muscles around an arthritic joint takes load off the joint itself. Better movement patterns reduce the grinding and catching. You can’t reverse arthritis, but you can absolutely change how it feels and functions day to day.

Should I exercise if my joints hurt?

Yes, but the right kind. The old advice to rest arthritic joints is outdated. Controlled strengthening and low-impact movement feed the joint and keep the surrounding muscles working. What you want to avoid is high-impact pounding on a joint that’s already irritated. We find your sweet spot.

What’s the difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in terms of treatment?

Osteoarthritis is wear and tear. Treatment focuses on strengthening, load management, and keeping the joint moving well. Rheumatoid arthritis is autoimmune, so your rheumatologist manages the disease itself with medication. My job is keeping your joints mobile and your muscles strong so the disease does less functional damage.

Will I need joint replacement eventually, or can physio delay it?

Sometimes physio delays it significantly, sometimes it doesn’t. Strong muscles and good movement patterns buy time. But if the joint is bone on bone and nothing conservative is working, replacement is the right call. My job is to make sure you’ve truly exhausted the non-surgical options first, and to get you strong going into surgery if that’s where it leads.
